About the project

Identification of the philanthropic institutions most relevant to the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. The project included strategic recommendations to strengthen existing relationships and identify new avenues for collaboration aligned with the Barcelona Metropolitan Area’s priorities and competencies, ensuring a positive and lasting impact across the territory.

Challenge

This type of funding represents a strategic opportunity to complement public financing. However, accessing it requires a thorough understanding of philanthropic institutions, their thematic priorities, operating models, and organizational cultures, as well as a tailored engagement strategy for each organization.

Approach

PHARE conducted a systematic analysis of the international philanthropic ecosystem, mapping more than 20 philanthropic organizations and developing detailed profiles of 10 priority institutions. The analysis included a review of the academic literature, an assessment of different philanthropic models, and an examination of the cultural differences across institutions. The report concluded with an analysis of opportunities and risks, along with practical recommendations for next steps.

Impact

The report provided the Barcelona Metropolitan Area with a clear roadmap for strategically engaging with the international philanthropic community. Its practical recommendations enable the AMB to move from a reactive to a proactive approach to building partnerships and mobilizing philanthropic resources. The report also identifies high-level networking opportunities and open funding calls of immediate strategic interest.
